Job Highlight

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative software solutions within a global organization. The position offers exposure to modern web technologies, AI/ML technologies, and cloud services, with opportunities for continuous learning and professional growth. We're looking for engineers who are grounded in fundamentals, quick to adapt to new technologies, and motivated by solving real problems for users across 80+ countries.

About the Group

The UNOPS IT Group (ITG) is at the forefront of digital transformation, designing, delivering, and managing all of UNOPS IT infrastructure and business applications. We are a global team, dedicated to harnessing cutting-edge technology to address critical business needs and empower UNOPS personnel worldwide. ITG provides the essential IT systems and tools that underpin the successful implementation of UNOPS projects and the delivery of corporate initiatives. From maintaining robust enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and developing bespoke business applications to managing our cloud infrastructure and supporting global collaboration platforms, our work ensures operational excellence. We are committed to continuous improvement, driving effectiveness and efficiency in UNOPS products and services, ultimately helping people build better lives and countries achieve peace and sustainable development.

Job Specific Context

The Core Systems Engineering (CSE) team designs, builds, and maintains the platforms, APIs, reusable components, and developer tools that power UNOPS digital solutions - from AI applications and integration layers to business systems and project templates. CSE serves as the technical backbone for the AI Centre of Excellence, Business Applications, and IT Operations teams, providing them with the building blocks they need to deliver their own solutions.

The successful candidate must be able to maintain a work schedule aligned with Copenhagen time (CET/CEST) +/- 1 hour. Additionally, because the role involves working with cloud-based environments and AI-assisted tools, a highly reliable internet connection and a stable power infrastructure are essential for day-to-day performance.

Role Purpose

Under the supervision of the Systems Architect, the Senior Software Developer will design, develop, and maintain enterprise web applications, platform components, and developer tools. The incumbent will operate within established architectural patterns while utilizing modern development practices, including AI-assisted coding. The role demands strong problem-solving instincts, a proactive approach to delivery, and the ability to pick up new technologies quickly and apply sound engineering principles across different frameworks and languages.

Functions / Key Results Expected

1. Core Development

  • Design, implement, test, and deploy end-to-end features for CSE platforms and components using modern web technologies (.NET Core, NodeJS, Python, React, Angular), following established architectural patterns and SOLID principles.

  • Build and maintain APIs, reusable components, and integration layers that other ITG teams can consume in their own applications.

  • Design and implement database schemas and data access layers using both relational (SQL) and NoSQL databases, applying ORM patterns and query optimisation.

  • Build responsive, accessible user interfaces with a solid understanding of component architecture, state management, and modern web standards.

2. AI-assisted Development

  • Build AI-powered application features such as chatbots, content analysis, and intelligent data processing, working within the frameworks and templates designed by the Systems Architect.

  • Use AI-assisted coding tools to improve productivity and code quality, ensuring AI-generated code meets the same quality bar as manually written code: reviewed, tested, secure, and compliant with organisational policies.

  • Apply prompt engineering principles when integrating AI capabilities into applications and when using AI development tools.

3. Cloud, Integration & DevOps

  • Integrate applications with Google Cloud Platform services (Vertex AI, Identity-Aware Proxy, Google Workspace, data processing and storage services) following established patterns and architectural guidance.

  • Implement authentication and authorisation features using OAuth, token-based auth, and RBAC within cloud identity and access management systems.

  • Work with the IT infrastructure team for deployment, environment configuration, and production troubleshooting.

  • Apply scalable application patterns (serverless, event-driven) and performance optimisation techniques under the guidance of the Systems Architect.

  • Work within established CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes to deliver and deploy features reliably.

4. Quality & Process

  • Write and maintain unit tests and integration tests for all components delivered.

  • Participate in SCRUM ceremonies, track development progress, and contribute to code reviews focusing on maintainability, security, and adherence to CSE standards.

  • Maintain clear technical documentation for components and features built, ensuring other teams can understand and extend the work.

5. Collaboration & Growth

  • Collaborate with Business Application developers on shared components, integrations, and consistent development practices across ITG.

  • Contribute to technical discussions, architectural decisions, and solution design reviews, bringing implementation experience and practical trade-offs to the table.

  • Stay current with emerging web development practices, AI/ML technologies, and cloud services through continuous learning.
